Incorporation of Natural Fibres in Rendering Mortars for the Durability of Walls

One of the main functions renders, together with overall aesthetic appearance building, is protection walls against external aggressive actions, such as water, salts solutions, erosion, and mechanical impacts. However, some anomalies renders may drastically hinder their ability. In fact, cracking, high water permeability, loss adherence to substrate limit barrier effect favour exposure actions. The incorporation fibres in mortars commonly pointed out reduce cracking susceptibility, due probable enhancement tensile strength ductility composite. use lime substitution part cement binder seen a method modulus elasticity therefore enhance resistance drying shrinkage. Therefore, this study investigates wall protection-related properties natural fibre-reinforced cement-lime binary at 1:1:6 volumetric ratio. With purpose, wool, coir, flax are used 20% by total mortar volume behaviour, assessed. Specifically, absorption capillarity, rates, permeability under pressure, strength, shrinkage evaluated. order evaluate renders’ durability walls, an artificial accelerated ageing test performed based on heating-freezing humidification-freezing cycles. results indicate that fibres’ addition reduced mortars, which suggests lower susceptibility cracking. seemed slightly affect performance only early ages. From results, it was concluded not affected incorporation. seem also impacts cycles improvements provided mortars’ remained after when compared without fibres, thus being potential alternative increase durability. These aspects particularly important for buildings, since they can extend service life promote sustainability.
